About 15 years ago, I was in Wheaton, Illinois. I was on a organized trip, staying at a hotel with no transportation options available to me in the evening. I was also hungry. And it was snowing.
Of in the distance, I saw the shimmering light of a White Castle across a large snow-covered field. Hunger got the best of me and I made the long walk to get the burgers.
When I arrived, only the drive through was open. The snow was really coming down. I was freezing, having walked well over two miles through the accumulating snow to get to the burger joint, but they wouldn't serve a pedestrian at the drive through and refused to open the doors for me.
I was undaunted. I shivered and waited about fifteen minutes for someone to pull in... I flagged them down, explained my fate, told them what I wanted and handed them the cash. The good Samaritan followed orders well and within minutes, I was meeting up with her right past the window, securing my change and burgers.
In a perfect world, I would have got a trip back to the hotel, too. No such luck. I stumbled through growing snowdrifts, warmed only by the bag of Slyders which I ate quickly as I made my way back.
True story, too!
