There's no disputing the huge popularity and influence of Rachael Ray. What makes her so darn popular?
"And all I can come up with is, she is what Ellen Degeneres and Oprah Winfrey ain't. She's white, hetero, suburban, NASCAR friendly and appears to be able to cook. She's who you would like to see hopping out of the SUV to pick up the kids. That's good comforting TV in regular America."
So Project Samo explains its theory of Rachael Ray popularity.
At least one commenter agreed.
"I can tell you as a huge Rachael Ray fan that you pretty much got it right. More specifically, she appeals to people who don't really know how to cook, but don't want to eat as much fast food, and who don't have a ton of time or energy to devote to cooking. her shows and books teach cooking skills in an approachable way that (at least for me) makes cooking fun. I hope you will try some of her recipes and see for yourself."
Of course, another commenter followed up immediately with anti-Rachael vitriol and argued that the assessment was not necessarily a flattering one. Apparently, being NASCAR friendly is an insult in some circles.
Whether you think the explanation is sincere or tongue-in-cheek bashing you can read it here.
