Another Live Journal Rachael Ray hater (who joins the crowd and spells her name "Rachel Ray," forgetting that extra "a") has a gripe about my favorite television goddess.
He claims she doesn't tip enough on $40 a day.
Excerpt:
"Ok I dunno if any of you watch the show 40 Dollars a Day on the Food Network. It stars Rachel Ray who basically goes around a city for a day eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner without spending more then 40 dollars. It seems like a good idea for the thrifty tourist but there is a problem. Whenever she factors in tax and tip for something it usually winds up being less then 2 dollars. Who the hell tips less then 2 dollars!? I mean the exposure from the show probably makes up for the fact that she herself tips poorly."
Let's do some math, whiz kid. Standard tip rate is about 15%. What is 15% of $40? $6. Assuming each meal took an equal percentage of the $40, what would the appropriate per meal tip be? $2. However, she generally spends less on breakfast and lunch. Thus, it is not at all surprising that the tips would be less than $2 more often than not.
As the genius behind the excerpted post notes, the publicity the show provides clearly swamps an average tip. Additionally, we have no idea whatsoever how the tipping ACTUALLY works. It's not like they plunk a camera on the other side of the table and just let life happen. The Rachael Ray program is well-produced and there are undoubtedly many cuts, etc. I am also willing to bet that the restaurant owner might just handle the serving or designate a server for the VIP and is then the recipient of additional compensation.
Whatever.
You can read the whole thing here, but beware of nasty language. Rachael Ray haters have a tendency to use some dirty words!

That's $2 for the day genius, not $2 for the meal.
actuallu nistuj you dumb ass if you knew how to tip or maybe how to read you would know that you were wrong 15 percent of 40 dollars is 6 not 2. when you break down the 6 between three meals a day then that is two. duh.
